  • Portugal has some of the best health and dental care in Europe and the world. It has been ranked number 12 by the World Health Organization, far above the U.S. which comes in at number 37. (2022 ranking)

Regulatory Standards: One of the primary reasons why it’s safer to have dental treatment in the EU is the stringent regulatory standards in place. EU countries adhere to strict guidelines and regulations concerning dental care, ensuring that patients receive a high level of treatment.

Qualifications and Training: Dentists and dental professionals within the EU are required to meet specific educational and training standards to practice. These standards ensure that practitioners possess the necessary skills and knowledge to provide safe, effective dental care. Dentists must first attend 3 years of medical school before they continue on for another 2 years in dental training and an additional 2 years or more for areas of specialization.

Legal Protections: Patients receiving dental treatment in Portugal and the EU in general have access to legal protections in case something goes wrong during their procedure. EU countries have established processes for addressing complaints and seeking compensation for medical negligence.

  • Portugal is often considered one of the safest countries in Europe to visit. It even ranked 7th out of 163 countries on the Global Peace Index 2023. The index is scored by considering factors like crime rate, terrorist acts, violent demonstrations, political scene, and relations with other countries.

  • In the realm of dental tourism, consumers have a plethora of options and countries to choose from. While there are excellent dental professionals around the globe, certain popular destinations require extra research and caution if chosen.

Regardless of whether you decide to receive dental care in Portugal, our priority is your safety, awareness, and receipt of top-notch dental treatment. We understand that cost plays a significant role in decision-making; however, opting for the lowest price can result in subpar dental work, potentially costing thousands more to repair the damage from a local dentist, if that is even feasible.

    Turkey - “Turkey Teeth”

“Turkey Teeth” meaning is new and is most often used in a sarcastic sense. The artificiality of the acquired teeth is emphasized, for which patients sacrificed their healthy and natural teeth.

The British Dental Association has sounded the alarm about the phenomenon, warning of the "considerable risks... of cut-price treatment" abroad, warning of many cases of infections and "ill-fitting crowns and implants that fell out".

Patrick Solera, from the French dentists' union, said he was horrified to see influencers going to Turkey "to have their teeth trimmed".

"You do not put a crown on a tooth that's a little yellow, and trimming a healthy tooth to put a crown amounts to mutilation. In France they lock you up for that."

    Mexico - Molar City

The town of Los Algodones in Mexico has earned the nickname "Molar City" due to its astonishing ratio of practicing dentists to population. With just 6,000 residents, the town boasts over 500 dental professionals, resulting in a dense concentration of clinics within a mere four-block radius.

As someone who holds a deep affection for Mexico - having lived in both Cabo San Lucas and Mexico City at different stages of my life - I feel compelled to caution against seeking dental care in border towns due to various safety concerns. While it is true that some dentists in Mexico offer affordable services, many fail to meet modern hygiene standards, lack up-to-date technological advancements, and may have limited education requirements.

Dentists in Mexico are not required to renew their licenses, nor are they mandated to keep up-to-date with the latest advancements in the field. Therefore, while a Mexican dentist may possess two decades of experience, they may have received their training in the late 1990s, leaving them out of touch with current best practices.
